Materials for DIY Sensory Play Dough

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, I highly recommend Coconut Oil.
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring
  • Saucepan
  • 1 cup flour
  • 15 drops of therapeutic grade essential oil.

  1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar (don’t skip!), and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
  2. Remove from heat and add flour.
  3. Stir.  When it cools to the touch, then knead until smooth.
  4. Knead your essential oils in and let the fun begin.
  5. Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.  We use a mason jar.  The last batch my husband made lasted a good 4-5 months before it fell on the carpet and could not be salvaged (how is there so much hair with weekly vacuuming?!?).


I really think this dough gets better over time, and that’s saying a lot because it starts out feeling great, it just seems to get smoother as you work it.

We made these colorful batches a few days ago, and today I played with the Peace & Calming (green) batch because I needed to calm down, it really helps even as an adult!

If you are going to err, I would suggest erring on the “generous” side of the cream of tartar.
