DIY Disposable Baby Wipes

DIY Wipes

DIY Disposable Baby Wipes are a wonderful worry free alternative to conventional wipes, and not quite so “crunchy” as reusable wipes. When you purchase better brands of baby wipes, such as Young Living’s Seedlings you are looking at a higher price tag. But, when you consider that most brands of baby wipes won’t even list their ingredients, you know something is amiss.  You don’t have to compromise and you don’t necessarily have to add to your laundry.

Personally, I am not making this DIY now because I am not due for another 8 weeks and everyone else is potty trained.  We mainly use Thirsties Cloth Wipes at home, and I just use with water.  My husband, who for the record washes most of our cloth diapers, strongly prefers that we carry disposable wipes in our diaper bags.  This is a nice middle-of-the-road option to keep cost down while controlling ingredients.

DIY Disposable Baby Wipes Supply List:

  • 1 Roll of Paper Towel.  I have not tried them all, but have appreciated Brawny select a size the most.
  • 2 containers.  I have seen people use Costco’s Kirkland brand empty coconut oil container, but I use Ziploc Containers Large Round
  • Knife
  • 4 Cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon mild soap: Dr. Bronner’s is a great choice, very few ingredients, make sure it’s unscented!
  • 20 drops Lavender
  • 10 drops Frankincense
  • 4 Tablespoons coconut oil

*If you are only making 1 container, then divide the recipe by half.

  1. Combine warm-hot water with coconut oil, soap, essential oils and stir until coconut oil is fully incorporated.  If possible, use a pitcher for this step to make pouring clean and easy.
  2. Cut the paper towel roll in half, place half in each round container.
  3. Pour water evenly over the paper towel(s), and cover with the lid(s).
  4. Wait 5 minutes, then turn each container upside down and set a timer for another 5 minutes.
  5. Next, take the lids off and gently remove the cardboard from the papertowel roll.

***if you want to get REALLY fancy, you can save flip lids from old baby wipe containers to create your own.  I am not this ambitious, but I bet my husband would get on board if I sent him the instructions!

  1. Remove lid from wipes container, place on your new DIY container and trace the ends with sharpie on your new lid.
  2. Cut out on your trace line and dispose of the unneeded plastic appropriately.
  3. Hot glue your flip lid onto your DIY container.
  4. Enjoy a simpler time at the changing table!
